iPhone Voice Memos

I have been playing around quite a bit with the iPhone Voice Memos feature and discovered like some of you have that there is a limit on the size of a memo you can send via email. Because of this I decided to write a quick post about that limit. Here are the quick details:
Max send time: 1m 59s
File type sent as: .m4a
File size at this time limit: 4.4MB
Sample Rate: 44.100 kHz
Channels: Mono
Sample Size: 16 bit
I was able to send this file while on WiFi, 3G and Edge networks. Downloading the file while not on WiFi was honestly not that bad at all (at least while on 3G) it took maybe 30/40 seconds. Obviously you can record for longer times than the max send time, you will just need to sync your phone with your pc/mac and look under the voice memos section under your playlists. Once inside iTunes you can change all the file information you want regarding that file.
My quick thoughts:
- It would be nice to be able to send a file longer than 1m 59s, sure most of my voice memos are short, but if I happen to need to “dictate” something it ends up being a bit short.
- It would be nice to be able to convert to a different file format, say something like .mp3 or .ogg, I understand I would loose some quality but at least file size would come down a little. But hey, it’s Apple so it probably won’t happen.
- It would be really cool if I could push these memos to my mobile me account like you can with pictures and video, or to a service like YouTube (something like what you can do with video).
- I think I may look for an external mic for my iPhone just to make it a little easier when recording the longer memos.
Well off to find the limits of sending iPhone Video via email now…
Thanks for the info on the aprox. file sizes of the voice memos. I’m recording an interview that I will be conducting via iChat tomorrow and was planning on recording it using WireTapPro, but I want to use my iPhone as a backup and was wondering how much space I should clear off to be safe.
